Three-layer extruded polyethylene coating (3LPE)

Three-layer extruded polyethylene coating (3LPE) consists of an extruded three-layer corrosion-resistant steel pipe coating.

Three-layer extruded polyethylene coatings are used on all types of pipes, including sewer systems, water pipes, gas pipes and other pipes where water is hazardous. Polyethylene coatings have been used to protect underground pipes from corrosion since the 1950s. This type of coating provides higher insulation resistance than asphalt coatings.

One advantage of this coating material is that it is super adhesive even at room temperature. Also, by heating the pipe, it can be easily cut back. In addition, this material has a very strong chemical resistance and is suitable for use on all forms of soil, even in the most aggressive environments.

The coating's chemical resistance prevents it from corroding. However, it should be noted that, like many materials, it is prone to certain types of corrosion. Because of this, as early as 1974, testing was already required to determine the aging or corrosion resistance of 3LPE. Do this by using a thermometer at 140°F (60°C). The measure of aging is the melt index, which has an initial value of 25%. Over the years, more advanced testing methods have been developed to determine the aging and corrosion resistance of 3LPE.
